Cherry Blossoms and Babies

Recommend | Tue, 06 May 2008 22:56

I promised myself that I wouldn't be one of those moms who posts pictures of her baby on her blog, so consider this a photo of cherry blossoms and a great incentive to run to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens while they are still in full bloom.

RIP Chicory

Recommend | Tue, 06 May 2008 22:50

Just taking a moment to mourn the neighborhood's best fried chicken, greens and various roasted veggies. Also, I'll miss the burger.

Albert Hofmann's Final Trip

Recommend | Thu, 01 May 2008 17:55

Albert Hofmann, inventor of LSD, passed a few days ago at the age of 102. This intrepid explorer of psychedelic compounds is directly responsible for much personal mental exploration of a few generations. A while back, before Hofmann's passing, one of the ABL:Radio DJs titled one of his mixes as an homage. Check out Dusty Hofmann - Mixed by Tal.

ABL:Radio - Dynamic Tension - Mixed by Carrie White[noise]

Recommend | Wed, 30 Apr 2008 20:35

We've been so busy promoting our DJ night, Suspiria, we haven't had much time to make mixes for the podcast. Thankfully Carrie sent me this one our way other day. I've been listening to it ever since. As always, Carrie has pulled together a nice menagerie of tunes. My favorite is the Midnight Juggernauts track "Into the Galaxy" right at the end. Nice touch! Carrie's next appearance at Suspiria is May 25th.

Recommend | Fri, 25 Apr 2008 18:12

Suspiria Line Up Change Tonight

Recommend | Fri, 11 Apr 2008 22:15

We've had a last minute line-up change. Tal will not be DJing Suspiria tonight (4/11). In his place, I will be making my first public DJ appearance in over 10 years. Check out my last mix "Dionysus And The Pleiades," for a sample.

Fujiya to Become a Gourmet Grocery

Recommend | Thu, 10 Apr 2008 19:39

Anybody on the south side of Carroll Gardens has certainly noticed the sushi restaurant space formerly known as Fujiya is undergoing some major renovations. According to a guy on site, it's going to be a gourmet grocery store, with involvement by the people who owned the Key Foods. Another source mentioned the store will have hot premade meals. So Carroll Gardens finally gets its full-service grocery store? Hopefully it will be a compliment to the other small stores on this side of the hood and not a threat and everyone will be happy.

Suspiria Returns To Club Deity This Friday

Recommend | Sun, 06 Apr 2008 04:03

Our last party was such a blast we've decided we must continue! Come on out this Friday (4/11) to Club Deity at 368 Atlantic Ave (between Hoyt & Bond). Adam Smith, Tal, Giant Pander, and Ladycréme will be bringing you all the best techno, electro, house and disco tunes from current to classics. If you're near downtown Brooklyn and looking to get your groove on, but don't want to train or cab-it to Manhattan, then you must check out Suspiria.

A New Brooklyn Life

Recommend | Thu, 03 Apr 2008 16:51

Our first child Devin was born yesterday evening. Being the proud father that I am, I couldn't resist the temptation to post his pic. Erin and Devin will be back from the hospital tomorrow and we will resume our regular posting schedule in the next few days.

Superdragon Attacks!

Recommend | Tue, 01 Apr 2008 02:31

Molly, former owner and bartender of the new defunct Lido Bar, will be rockin' with her bandmates at Bar Matchless in Greenpoint this Thursday night. If Superdragon's sound is anything like Molly's antics, you will be outrageously entertained. Every time I pass the vacant Lido on Columbia St., I'm filled with fond memories and shed a tear.

Columbia Street's New Religious Icons Store

Recommend | Mon, 31 Mar 2008 13:35

Columbia Street businesses seem to have a tough time hanging on in Carroll Gardens West. The lack of weekday foot traffic, combined with the ongoing street renovations, do not make Columbia Street the next Smith Street. Still, I've heard store rent isn't cheap. And that could explain why businesses close in the area more often than they open. So, I can't say I really understand the presence (or economic viability) of this new religious icons store, Botanica El Phoenix, at Union and Columbia streets.Though an equal opportunity religious icons store (saw a few Buddhas), most of the stock seems centered...

Subway Reads: Delicious bites of goodness

Recommend | Mon, 31 Mar 2008 03:23

After months of waiting, and untold journeys to Sweet Melissa Patisserie for sugar fixes, The Sweet Melissa Baking Book hit my kitchen the other week. I immediately cracked the spine at the index to search for my favorite  treat ... and there it was: "madeleines, chestnut honey, 62-63." If you have never had a Sweet Melissa madeleine, then you need to get up immediately, scrounge $1.25 in change, and proceed straight to the bakery. Forget Proust, from  henceforth when you think of madeleines, the name you'll murmur will be Melissa. Madeleines are cookies that are also cake....

Red Hook's Metal and Thread Opens Tomorrow

Recommend | Sat, 29 Mar 2008 02:17

I know I'm not the first blog to report this, but I figure a new shop in Red Hook can use all the help it can get. And so, if you're wandering Van Brunt tomorrow (maybe say having a coffee and cupcake at Baked or brunch at Hope and Anchor), you should stop by metalwork and sewn-goods shop Metal and Thread at 298 Van Brunt, between Coffey and Dikeman streets. The work is the product of two artists, Denise Carbonell and Derek Dominy. See the Etsy store for a better idea of their stuff. The store opens at noon, and the party starts at 4 p.m.

Killing in Carroll Gardens

Recommend | Fri, 28 Mar 2008 05:21

I had heard a rumor of a suspicious death in the neighborhood this week, and today's story in the New York Times confirms it:Two men were killed in Brooklyn in separate encounters, the police said on Tuesday. In the first, Sanjeev Seekoomar, 34, was found on Tuesday morning stabbed to death in his basement apartment at 326 Carroll Street in Carroll Gardens, the police said. The door to the apartment was pushed in and the apartment ransacked, indicating a possible burglary or robbery, but motive was being investigated, the police said. Not that I regularly check the blotter, but this strikes me out...

Brooklyn Restaurant Week 2008: Lunetta

Recommend | Thu, 27 Mar 2008 20:16

I was going to take photos of each of our dishes at Lunetta (my first time there, incidentally) ... and then I forgot. Call it a testament to the food or perhaps a compliment to our engaging dinner party company. I did, at least, snag a shot of the menu.I started with the baby arugula salad with hazelnuts and parmesan, which was tossed with a very zingy dressing. The generous presence of crunchy hazelnuts and the tart parmesan made this a worthy order. However, after tasting a companion's ricotta bruschetta, and learning sous-chef Betsy Devine whips the ricotta up fresh, I wanted to give up my leafy...

Giant Panders Do It!

Giant Pander (the Dj formerly known as Dekker) will be mixing records with fury alongside Carrie Whitenoise at the weekly Do It! party in Hugs Bar (Williamsburg) tonight (3/25/08).

New Restaurant Alert: Olive Vine Cafe

Recommend | Tue, 25 Mar 2008 18:52

Spring must be in the air because new spots are popping up in Carroll Gardens like tulips. All I got on this one at 316 Court Street at Degraw Street is what the sign says--fine Middleastern [sic] Food coming soon with the name of Olive Vine Cafe. Hey, if it means a secondary spot for falafel in the neighborhood, I'm all for it. A woman cannot live by Zaytoons alone.
