Auto Sleep or Wake Your Mac

Recommend | Sun, 26 Oct 2008 22:07

If you ever forget to turn off your Mac, or use it in the morning right before you go to work or school, consider setting a timer. You will both save energy and time. I think this would be pretty useful to have your Mac turn on as you get out of the shower, and then have it turn off shortly after you leave. Just click the look under the Energy Saver settings of your System Preferences. Click the button at the bottom right corner of the window that says Schedule. Enter the Girrelephant!

Snackr Keeps You Fed

Recommend | Sat, 25 Oct 2008 20:03

Snackr is a new app that keeps you from going feed hungry. It will can be placed anywhere on the screen and can import or export OPLM files, or just ad one feed at a time. Feeds scroll across or down the Snackr bar, and are clickable. What I found useful is that you don't have to open Safari to read something, and it will not show you duplicates, as well as read items are grayed out. There is somewhat of a lack of features as of now, but it does not look complete yet. So far there have been no crashes, and this looks great for such little developed of an app.Enter the Girrelephant!

Dubai Buildings

As Dubai continues to grow and develop as the worlds riches city, it also leads in technology and architectural development. As amazed as I was when the Crown Prince of Dubai had decided to start construction even though Nakheel had yet to finish the blueprints, this new rotating building is even more amazing. I just wish the United States would to some extent catch on to this type of construction. If this of any interest to you, consider taking a look at the Dubai Pearl.Enter the Girrelephant!

Playlist Folders

Recommend | Sat, 18 Oct 2008 17:57

The other day I told you about creating and using smart playlist to sync only what you want to your iPhone or iPod when you have limited space. If you found that useful, and have a lot of playlist, you may want to consider putting some of them in a folder.Open iTunes and go to File> New Playlist Folder. Then just drag the playlist you want into that folder. If you want to remove a playlist from a folder, just drag and drop it out of the folder on the the word "Playlist".Enter the Girrelephant!

iTunes: Smart Playlist

Recommend | Thu, 16 Oct 2008 02:59

Considering the fact that all my music, let alone, my whole iTunes library does not fit on my iPhone, I had to create a way to always have the music that I like the most. The solution was smart playlist. This way I never have to mess with anything more than once, and will always have a consistent library that updates based on what I like the most. With an exception to one playlist which is designated for my iPhone for the songs that for whatever reason don't fall under any of my smart playlist; or for the ones I know I want on my iPhone. To create a smart playlist open iTunes and go to File>...

Installer: Bypass System Requirements

Recommend | Sat, 11 Oct 2008 01:06

Can't install iTunes 8 because you have Tiger? There is a very quick and simple fix for this that will allow you to bypass most system compatibility checks as well as re-download or install updates. Open a finder window and go to /System/Library/CoreServices/ either by clicking through each folder or by just going to the Go menu and choosing Go to Folder... and typing in /System/Library/CoreServices/. In the CoreServices folder, find and open SystemVersion.plist (Depending on your view settings, you may or may not be able to see the .plist part). Tiger will open the file with TextEdit; and...

Instantly Save Loaded YouTube Videos

3 Weeks ago I started to press keys around my keyboard while I clicked on things, and I found a great way to save YouTube videos that is way better than just using the activity manager. The way to do it is to let your YouTube Video play as usual, but then once it is finished loading, just hold down the ⌘ Command as you click. It will save just as anything else would download. Follow UpApparently this requires SafariStand which is a free and easy download that allows you do many other really cool things with Safari. The download is available for Leopard and Tiger. This works better than going...

Safari Activity Window

Recommend | Tue, 07 Oct 2008 21:41

If you use Safari, you may be wishing that you would have know this trick much sooner. In the Window menu, you can click on Activity and view all activity that has occurred or is in process for any of your open Safari windows. I have noticed that Safari for Windows does exclude certain items in this list, but if you are using Safari for Mac, then you get to see everything, and can just doubl click on any item to instantly download it.Enter the Girrelephant!

iTunes 8 Finally Fixes App Update Issues

Recommend | Sun, 28 Sep 2008 09:13

Back in iTunes 7, all the way back a whole 5 days or so, iTunes would not delete the old versions of an app when you downloaded an update, the new update would just assume a new name such as "Remote2.ipa" or something like that. Now in iTunes 8 the problem is fixed and old versions of the app are automatically moved to the trash/recycle bin.Enter the Girrelephant!

GSM Numeric Signal on 2.x.x

Recommend | Mon, 22 Sep 2008 04:15

For those of us with jailbroken iPhones, who want to have a numeric GSM signal strength displayed instead the standard signal bars, just install QuickGold through Cydia, and then search for, and open FieldTest. Now you can just tap on the signal bars and make them change to a numeric signal. As of now the reading goes back to the regular bars when you exit FieldTest...I really want to find out how to get the numeric battery info back. Enter the Girrelephant!

Free Quicktime Pro Features and Other Powertools

Recommend | Sat, 20 Sep 2008 06:04

German site, monkeyBread Software has many free downloads (donation-ware) that offer some of the extra features you get when you buy Quicktime Pro, as well as other great utilities and power-tools. While most of the software is for Mac, there is quite a bit of it out there for Windows as well. One of the best is the Full Screen Movie Player for Quicktime Movies. While the website has some great Quicktime extras, they also have some other power-tools that should have been included in Windows and Mac. My favorite from them is theTreeSizefile listing program. Open In Finder Shortcut (Stacks)

Recommend | Wed, 17 Sep 2008 06:43

After discovering the command+click shortcut in spotlight, I decided to try this on a couple other things. One of those was Stacks. If you have a cluttered stacks folder it may be easier to click on the stack and choose "Open In Finder". If you do this a lot it gets annoying to have to click on the stack and then click again to open the folder in Finder. Next time try holding down the command key while clicking on a stack.Enter the Girrelephant!

Easy Way to Display Ported Number in iPhone Contact List - No Hacking Required

Extend Your Routers Range Easily

Recommend | Wed, 17 Sep 2008 06:43

The other day while my internet was down I decided to inspect some of my router settings. Of course this was most likely due to the fact that I was hoping that maybe some setting got changed by accident. What I ended up finding was the page to control the beacon power of the router. Where as my Wi-Fi used to only extend to about half way down the driveway, it now extends all the way across the street with the settings you see below. Of course the results will depend on where your router is in your house, but it does help quite a bit. If you have never logged into your router or configured it, try...

iTunes Update Allows Much Faster iPhone 2.0 Backup

If you have not already, I would recomend that you go ahead and update your iTunes as there are notacible improvements in both stability of Apps, and an amazing boost to the backup speed. I have 49 third-party apps as of now (not jailbroken...yet-waiting for Installer 4) and can get a backup of my iPhone in about 5 minutes. It used to take much longer. When I first upgraded to the 2.0, my backup literally took over 3 hours with about the same amount of apps, and untl now, I have just been clicking the little "x" button when iTunes says "Backing Up" Just now it took me about 5 minutes to add about...

Use Spotlight to Open Containing Folders

Recommend | Wed, 17 Sep 2008 06:43

I use spotlight every day and all the time, it is much faster than having to find the app in the application folder or sort through my hierarchy of documents. The other day I just realized that if you hold down the command key while clicking on an item it will open up the containing folder without launching or opening the actual file. This trick also applies for stacks.Personally, I have found this especially useful when trying to remove an app because it is much faster for spotlight to point out the file for me rather than having to browse through a folder. It is also great when you need to pull...

McCain Rationality

Recommend | Mon, 15 Sep 2008 03:09

McCain has some interesting things to do, but some of them are just not that logical, nor are they very well supported by any evidence. Economics: Strength Stop wasting money on private projects or other special interest type f spending. Allow for research but do set a budget and make it so spending has to be pre approved so we don't get as much stupid spending. Energy Strength: The best idea right now is to think outside of the box and to invest not just in more efficient technology, but also find alternate resources that we can use. McCain has a good strategy by doing this. Deciding to actually...
