Baltimore has officially flipped the switch on a public high-speed Internet project based on WiMax technology -- —wireless framework some people describe as Wi-Fi's "big sister." This makes the Charm City the first in the country to offer commercial WiMax service. We explore what this means for consumers in Baltimore and whether it will set any national trend lines.

Last month, I had the pleasure of talking to Maynard, an Australian TV and radio host whose illustrious career includes Triple-J (providers of those fine "Like A Version" cover albums) and ABC, among others.

We talk about the history of covers, and the multitude of shows I (try to) host and produce.

As the senior vice president and first ever chief innovation officer of the Tribune Company, Lee Abrams is spearheading some major changes in the newspaper business. This is Abrams' first foray into journalism and his leadership style is, well, different. Abrams discusses his
infamous staff memos and his vision for the future of the newspaper business.

There's been a lot of coverage of attempts to convince voters that Barack Obama is a Muslim. But according to a report released by the liberal watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, no one's talking about the underlying presumption: Muslim is a pejorative term. FAIR's senior analyst Steve Rendall explains.

On The Media: Instruments of War (On The Media: Friday, 10 October 2008)

As reported in The New York Times last year, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and others turned, again and again, to military analysts ' retired members of the armed forces hired by broadcast and cable networks ' for their supposed expertise on the war. Only, it turns out, the analysts were often coached by the Pentagon in what the Times said were “hundreds of private briefings.” As the FCC launches an investigation, we thought we'd replay our interview with Maj. Robert Bevelacqua, a former Green Beret and Fox News contributor through 2005.

On The Media: Ad Infinitum (On The Media: Friday, 10 October 2008)

Free television has never been exactly free. In exchange for programming, viewers have always been subjected to commercials. But with Tivo changing the rules, advertisers are integrating products into shows, even the <a href="

I’ve let a few things slide over the last couple of weeks, and one of those things is listening to music submissions and digging around for new tunes to play. So I’m going to take this week off and give myself a little more time to take care of that. If you want to catch [...]

Coverville: How about a little fireside chat?

Lots of exciting things happening in Coverville-land! I'm going to take a moment to update you on some things that are happening with a few of my shows, as well as DVD shipments.

First off, and I teased about this in Twitter, I've been thinking about a change in format to the weekly Coverville episodes. There are a couple factors that I've been considering in order to make this format change:

1. Sundays are becoming increasingly busier, making it difficult to produce a show. You'll notice that ever since I've gotten back from Coverville 500, doing the all-request show on Sunday night has been hit or miss. The weekends, for the most part, are family time, and after a full day of doing things with family and friends, I was often too wiped out to record a show. And as I mentioned before, I won't record a show if I'm not feeling up to it, because I think it'll come through. Plain and simple.

2. Based on the emails I receive, and an informal Twitter survey, a large number of listeners are a few shows behind. Producing three shows a week is not only tricky for me, it's tricky for the average listener to stay current. For example, Leo Laporte and Veronica Belmont have both confided in me that they've either stopped listening to Coverville, or at least slowed down, because I produce too many shows.

But giving up the request shows? It'll never happen. The Tuesday night theme shows? I need those too. And don't even think about bumping off the Thursday night Cover Stories. So, I'll be spicing (splicing?) up the variety of the shows and adding a set of requests to the beginnings of the Tuesday and Thursday night shows, and then moving Musically Challenged to the end of the Tuesday night show. As always, the consistency of the show is important to me, and I'll make sure that the requests I pick go with the overall flows of both shows.

For those of you (like me) who are visual, it'll go from this:

To this:

We'll try it for a few weeks and see how it goes. Please, PLEASE offer your feedback. This show has become what it is today because of your feedback, and I constantly recognize and appreciate that fact. we'll start with tomorrow night's show. And bear with me for the first couple episodes - it may take a couple for me to get the swing of things.

Next, let's talk about Today in Music History. I've decided to move TIMH from The Podcast Network to be a true part of the Coverville Media "umbrella", which also includes Lyrics Undercover (and hopefully someday, the relaunch of the Not Lame Podcast). The Podcast Network has been great to work with, and I appreciate the experience and exposure that they were able to provide for the show. However, I realized that if want to continue to make a living through podcasting full-time, I need to take the show and its potential growth and manage it myself.

The new web address of Today In Music History is http://TodayInMusicHistory.Coverville.com, and the new feed is:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/TodayInMusicHistory

Another project I've been working on has been The Wii Show, with Charlie George. This was a weekly show that focused on news, opinions and reviews for the Nintendo Wii. As Charlie and I would record each show, we'd find ourselves tangentially mentioning other platforms, most notably the other two next generation consoles, XBox 360, and Playstation 3. So we've decided to create a new weekly show, Tired Thumbs, to cover those other consoles along with the Wii. And because things are better in threes, we've asked a third host, Sara, to join us for the show and provide her insight, as well as a woman gamer's perspective. In addition to the standard MP3 version of the show, we'll produce an AAC version which will allow you to jump to specific content in case you're only interested in news and information about one console. Please stay tuned to this very blog for information about the launch of Tired Thumbs.

If you were a subscriber to The Wii Show, you'll be happy to know that it's not going anywhere. The show will continue to be a part of The Podcast Network, with new hosts, and I encourage you to continue to enjoy what it has to offer.

Finally, I wanted to give you an update on the Coverville 500 DVDs. I've been sending them out in the order in which the donations were received, and so far, I've completed the month of July. I'm shipping out a major portion each week, and I believe I'm staying on track to have all of them shipped by the end of October. If you made your donation in July, and you haven't received your DVDs by the end of this week (within the U.S.) or next week (outside the U.S.), please let me know.

Again, thanks for your time, and your continued support of the show. With so many podcasts to choose from, I can't put into words how much I appreciate that you take the time to listen to mine.

This is so brilliant, I'm not going to say anything about it, expect:

1. Thanks to Arcadia for sharing, and
2. As awesome as the first two minutes are, the instrumental break is FANTASTIC

Coverville: Like Nouvelle Vague? You'll love this!

Marc Collin, the producer of Nouvelle Vague (Bossa Nova-styled covers of punk singles), has a new project called Hollywood, Mon Amour. The new album features 13 covers of songs made popular in movie soundtracks, like "Call Me" (Blondie), "Don't You Forget About Me" (Simple Minds) and "This Is Not America" (David Bowie).

The album features guest vocals like Yael Naim, Juliette Lewis and Katrine Ottosen.

What's even better? You can get the album for free by signing up for a free eMusic trial (and you'll still have 12 songs left, which you can use for the earlier Nouvelle Vague albums):

Here's the eMusic sign-up:

Here's the Hollywood, Mon Amour album on eMusic:
Coverville: Seal uncovers his "Soul" next month

Called "Soul", it will feature - you guessed it - covers of popular soul and R&B hits. See the article, with a tracklisting here.

The tracks are all recognizable favorites, but still, it'll be interesting to hear them sung in Seal's smooth style. His website even includes a video for "A Change Is Gonna Come", his cover of the Sam Cooke classic.

Coverville: Lucinda Williams covers AC/DC on her new album

Lucinda Williams' new album, "Little Honey", apparently is a more positive-styled turn for the singer/songwriter. The album, due October 14, also includes a cover song: AC/DC's "It's A Long Way To The Top".

The country has weighed an 800 plus billion-dollar bill against fear of the economic unknown and in doing so has had to decide whom to believe. Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut compares public perceptions of the government and the press to the level of trust it takes to save an economy.

During The Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt told Americans that their faith and confidence was key to recovery.
In just 5 months, the website Hulu has become one of the top destinations on the web for full episodes of network television shows.

Manga is Japan’s ubiquitous art form; a kind of comic book equivalent that illustrates everything from tax preparation to hard-core fantasy. But it is its growing success outside Japan that’s highlighted a new utility, what Japanese politicians are calling ‘manga diplomacy.’ Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica, explains why politicians are recognizing the form as a powerful cultural export.

Every time bloggers hit publish they risk being sued for copyright infringement, invasion of privacy or defamation. While the risk seems small, groups like the Media Bloggers Association say frivolous lawsuits are chilling free speech in the blogosphere. So MBA founder Robert Cox has helped start insurance for bloggers in an attempt to protect against costly litigation.

Coverville: Neil Young Tribute still going strong

From an American Laundromat Press Release. I'm always happy to hear this kind of stuff; it's a great cause, and a fantastic tribute album!
______________________________________

“Cinnamon Girl ' Women Artists Cover Neil Young For Charity” Raises Over $22K for Breast Cancer Charity

Mystic, CT - October 1, 2008; the American Laundromat Records produced benefit CD “Cinnamon Girl ' Women Artists Cover Neil Young For Charity” is the labels best-selling record in history and has raised over $22K for "Casting For Recovery", a national non-profit support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer. The Double-CD focuses on Neil Young's early work (1969 - 1979) and features 21 new cover versions of Neil's most popular songs by artists Tanya Donelly, Britta Phillips, Lori McKenna, Jill Sobule with John Doe, Josie Cotton, Kristin Hersh, The Watson Twins, Darcie Miner, Elk City and many more.

"This was a personal project for the label and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. To raise over $22K for the charity in 9 months is pretty spectacular for us. To put things in perspective, American Laundromat Records is basically a one-man operation run out of my tiny basement in Connecticut as a hobby (I have a day job). The project has raised a lot of awareness for the charity and many women have benefited greatly as a result."

"Cinnamon Girl" was produced by Joe Spadaro (American Laundromat Records founder & president) in loving memory of his mother Norine R. Spadaro who passed on in July of 2005 after a 6-year battle with breast cancer. All the artists generously donated their time and talent to the project and proceeds are donated to Casting For Recovery, a national non-profit charity that provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by the disease to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn fly-fishing, "a sport for life." The weekend retreats incorporate counseling, educational services and the sport of fly-fishing to promote mental and physical healing. Founded in 1996, Casting for Recovery has been offering free retreats across the country. They rely on local volunteers and organizations to support their community based retreats.

iTunes downloads make up the majority of overall "Cinnamon Girl" sales. The top ten downloads follow:

01. Heart of Gold - performed by Tanya Donelly
02. The Needle and the Damage Done - performed by Lori McKenna
03. Only Love Can Break Your Heart - performed by Amilia K. Spicer
04. Cinnamon Girl - performed by Euro-Trash Girl
05. Ohio (slow version) - performed by Dala
06. Down By The River - performed by Jill Sobule (with John Doe)
07. Helpless - performed by Elk City
08. Ohio (rockin' version) - performed by Darcie Miner
09. Cowgirl in the Sand - performed by Josie Cotton
10. Comes A Time - performed by Kate York

"Cinnamon Girl" is available worldwide and through all online outlets including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. Sales continue to be strong and the label expects to donate another $3K by years-end.

American Laundromat Records is an indie-rock label based out of Southeastern, CT. Founded in April of 2004 by Joe Spadaro the label is best known for their popular 2005 compilation "High School Reunion - a tribute to those great 80's films" which featured indie-rockers Frank Black, Kristin Hersh, Matthew Sweet, The Dresden Dolls and others covering beloved tunes from some of the 80's most popular teen films. All Music Guide called the tribute “One of the finest tributes ever amassed!” Upcoming American Laundromat projects include the January 2009 slotted release "Just Like Heaven - a tribute to The Cure" featuring The Wedding Present, Dean & Britta, The Submarines, The Rosebuds, The Brunettes, Tanya Donelly, The Poems and others covering the Cure's most popular songs.
Around 800 people were arrested during the four day Republican National Convention earlier this month. Dozens were reporters, and one was Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, who argues the arrests have a chilling effect on journalists.

KCRW's Bookworm: David Markson

The Last Novel (Shoemaker & Hoard)
David Markson has invented his own "personal genre." His novels
present collaged panoramas of the travails of art and artistsâ€'the bad
reviews, the rivalries, the life-long neglect, the impoverished deaths. His juxtapositions can be comic or tragic.
