That's just how star-studded this evening is. Dave Eggers is buried in the sixth sentence in this paragraph. Also: Department of Eagles (members of Grizzly Bear), Thao Nguyen and Zach Rogue. The Daily Show's John Oliver hosts.

Remember the first time you ever saw an ant hill? That parade of black insects pouring in and out of a small sand mound…most of us stopped, looked and then moved on to other parts of the playground. E. O. Wilson is the kid who never took his eyes off the mound. He grew up to revolutionize the fields of entomology, sociobiology and conservationist thought. E. O. (E is for Edward, O is for Osborne) got a nod from Time Magazine on their list of the 25 Most Influential People in America and picked up a few Pulitzers along the way. But before all that he was just an eight-year-old boy in the South whose nickname was “Bugs.”

Ed and Robert Krulwich spoke a few years ago at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan about Ed’s early insect-philia and how it blossomed. Ed tells Robert about the time he figured out how to make hundreds of ants trace his name and the time he convinced an ant colony one of their ants was dead when it was anything but.

To paraphrase Meat Loaf, two out of five ain't bad. On Saturday we won Emmys for Outstanding Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming. Ira writes:

Up until the weekend of the ceremony, we'd all been kind of shrugging it off. We wouldn't be in the big televised ceremony that the stars are at; our categories were presented as part of the "Creative Arts" Emmys which includes all sorts of tech awards�'Best Sound Editing for a Series, Best Makeup Without Prosthetics, that kind of thing�'and some of the nonfiction and reality show awards. Since it wasn't the big Emmy ceremony, what was the big deal?

But then we got there and suddenly it seemed very big and official and there was a red carpet and actual TV stars and now we wanted to win very badly.

We lost the first three awards we were up for: Cinematography, Writing and Editing. It started to feel like this wasn't our crowd, like we weren't going to win anything. And then, when they read the nominees for Best Nonfiction Series, the camera man roaming the aisle next to me flipped through some notes and then trained his camera on James Lipton, the host of Inside the Actors Studio, one of our competitors. About a half-dozen of us saw this and we turned to each other and said "Okay, we're dead." And then we won! When they called our names, it was truly a shock. It was like one of those movies where they fake you out with an ending where everything goes wrong and the main character dies and you're sad and then Aha! Psych! And everything works out great. It was very exciting.

Turns out the although this is not the big Emmys ceremony, this one will be broadcast next weekend on E!

Zoe Keating is the cellist from our live show, War of the Worlds. She used to play with the band Rasputina and now solos and records music for films, such as horror flick, “The Devil’s Chair” (coming out September 30th) and a PBS documentary on Lincoln’s assassination. Her music process reminded us a bit of ours (looping and layering sound) so she and Jad sat down together in San Francisco to talk shop and listen to some unreleased stuff off her new album (as of yet untitled). In this podcast, you’ll hear Jad and Zoe discuss the physics (if not metaphysics) of looping sound and how to use a 17th century instrument to make avant-garde electronic music:

Hi there. Ira Glass writing this. A few weeks ago, I met this listener who had an idea for the pledge drive. He said he had a close friend who listens to public radio every day, but never pledges. He said I should call the friend and record the conversation as I try to talk him into pledging. He said I should get other listeners to turn in their non-pledging friends.

I'll admit, I'm not totally sure if this is a smart idea or not. But it seems worth a few phone calls to find out. So I'm turning to you.

I'm writing to ask you to turn in a friend. If you know someone who listens to public radio avidly, several days a week or more, talks about stuff they hear on Morning Edition or Car Talk or our show, but they never pledge...I'd like to give them a call. I'll be nice, I swear. But I will ask them why they don't pledge. And I'll try to talk them into pledging. And I'll record the whole thing and�'if it works�'I'll put it on the radio.

So...if you know someone like that...send me their names and a sentence or two about how much public radio they seem to listen to...and their phone numbers. Don't warn them that I might call. And send me your number too. I might want to begin these little pledge segments with the person who's turning in the deadbeat listener.

Send all the info to radio@thislife.org with the subject "Turning in a Friend."

One more thing. This whole scheme probably only makes sense if the person turning in their friend is someone who pledges. So if you don't pledge, please know a) we're still friends b) you're in the majority; most people who hear our show never pledge and c) this little scheme I'm cooking up for the show is probably one for you to sit out.
